Maddie, Laura. The daughter of Sade was named Madeleine Laure.
Leland. This name ultimately stems from Irish faol, meaning a wolf.
Hayward. Literally “hedge warden”, someone who guards the village fields to protect them from unwelcome animals.
Horne. Horned owl. Ten horns of the beast in Revelation 13:1; two horns of a lamb in Revelations 13:11; Garland Briggs reads out these passages in Missing Pieces.
Otis. (Minor character in The Return.) Otus, a Latin word referring to horned owls.1
Palmer. Literally referring to palm trees. The name comes from pilgrims to Palestine, who brought back palm tree branches as souvenirs. In particular, it referred to the crusaders, and in general, to any pilgrim.
Leo. The lion is one of the symbols of Hathor (as well as of Inanna/Ishtar and Astarte), together with the sycamore tree and the color turquoise.
Shelly. Common motif of Aphrodite or Venus being formed inside a scallop shell, such as in The Birth of Venus.
Donna. Madonna; her middle name is “Marie”.2 Donna angelica. Generally, any woman, womanhood as such. Etymologically, derived from Latin domus, “home”, which is also related to the English word “timber”.3
Laura. Literally referring to laurel trees. Greek “Daphne” (see below).
Cooper. Cupid (Eros), the son of Mars (Ares) and Venus (Aphrodite). Connection to Laura via the myth of Apollo and Daphne.4 See also the myth of Eros and Psyche.5
Dale Cooper. Dale, meaning “valley”; also, a channel where water runs through. Cooper, a profession related to making wooden vessels for holding liquids (perhaps etymologically related to “cup”).
Briggs. Literally “bridge”.
Garland, Laura. Laurel garland.6 Associated with Apollo; see above. Crown of immortality; see below.
Laura Palmer. Crown of immortality, a wreath of laurel, palm and other materials.7 In Ancient Egypt, associated with Osiris. In Christianity, associated with martyrdom. Palm Sunday.
BOB, Mike, the Arm, Harry S. Truman. “BOB MIKE” is an anagram of “IKE BOMB”. “Ike” Eisenhower, successor of Truman; like nearly all American presidents, a war-mongering, genocidal psychopath, who however did not use the bomb again, thus partially dis-“arm”-ing.
